Afghan Box Camera Workshops
UWE Bristol, Arnolfini together with Bristol Refugee Artist Collective (BRAC) is pleased to facilitate 2 days of free workshops tutored by UWE student artists and members of BRAC. Participants will learn to make black and white images using a combination of digital mobile phone images and traditional analogue photography.
Afghanistan is one of the last places on earth where photographers used a simple type of instant camera called the kamra-e-faoree as a way of making a living. The hand-made wooden camera is both camera and darkroom in one and generations of Afghans have had their portraits taken by such a camera. At one stage it was even outlawed when, during their early rule in Afghanistan, the Taliban banned photography, forcing photographers to hide or destroy their tools.
